Sertial's Quest - Chapter 6

As dawn awoke us, I found the three of us still snuggled up together. I can just feel the warmth and love coming from my soul mate and life long friend.

But as things could not stay as peaceful as I wished we all heard a Dragon’s roar coming from the valley floor and it sounded like it came from the Glen.

I got up and hollered, “FROYTEL, RAYCOR!!!” Soon the two leaders were roaring and the Dragons and Griffins that were on the plateau started running towards the edge and jumping off into the air, I then said, “come on guys get up something’s going on.”

Raycor and Froytel went to their lookout positions and they were roaring up a storm by the time I got to Raycor. I was looking over the valley below; there were Dragons fighting with one Ogre near the river Olfred and at lest 5 Griffins on the other side attacking the Dwarfs that were there, at least the ones that didn’t have any arrows sticking out of them.

Justyn had reached Froytel and he could see down that there were Dwarfs climbing up the side of the plateau they were on right near the falls on his side.

We all then connected as one and it was like we could see through each other’s eyes now. I told Raycor “We’ve got to stop the Dwarfs from getting up here.” As I could feel the terror coming from Justyn and I wanted to keep him as safe as I had told him he would be.

The Dwarfs were about a quarter of the way up when I saw three Dragons come out of the clouds straight towards the cliff’s wall one was brown the others were green.

They sent fireballs at the wall right into the Dwarfs and above them hitting the ones that were higher and making the wall explode with fire, the rocks were exploding all over the place and falling down the face of the cliff and onto the lower Dwarfs knocking them off.

The Dragons kept up their assault on the cliff wall until I couldn’t see any movement down below when the dust, smoke and fire was settling.

God what a waist of life there must have been 100’s of them up there.

I then looked back over to the river by the Glen and it was a massacre. The Ogre lay dead or dieing as he was burning from head to foot. The Griffins, which had increased in number, had killed all of the Dwarfs that were there near the Glen or on the river.

I did see that we took a couple of losses though. Two Dragons were down off to the west, but by the river there were at least 5 griffins not moving, I saw 3 over on the right limping badly.

One of them, its left wing looked like it was almost torn off the other two looked like they either took hits to their sides or something was wrong with their legs.

I could see Elvin Folk and some Fairy Folk coming out of the Forest toward them so I knew they would get the help they needed.

I was really mad now, I could just tell by the feeling of my eyes that they were white I wanted this to end and I wanted it to end “NOW!!!”

I sent to Raycor, “To have the Dragons come in first and have them shoot their fire as close as they could to anything that moved.” Then I sent to Justyn, “to have the Griffins come in after the Dragons and pick off anything that was moving be it Ogre or Dwarf.”

Soon there were two loud roars coming from my friends then I saw in the sky in front of me all the flying creatures head into the clouds. There was a great roaring coming from the east then the Dragons started to come out of the clouds heading over the river Olfred and they started getting lower as they went; they then started to shoot their fireballs onto the valley floor.

The ground in the valley erupted in flames and explosions, bodies flying everywhere with fire all around, there must have been at least 60 Dragons hitting the valley floor with their fire it was like a bombardment of fire. I was in awe at the sight of the Dragons who were led by the black and white ones; they were just shooting fire out of their mouths so fast.

I even saw an Ogre fly at least 15 feet from a couple of blasts he had taken. The Dwarfs were no better they were being thrown at least 30 maybe even 50 feet from where they last stood. Then I heard another great roaring coming from the east and soon I saw the Griffins were shooting out of the sky and landing in the valley there weren’t that many left but they went from the river and worked their way west just ripping into Dwarfs and ogres alike, like the sun would never rise again.

With the Dragons circling the sky and coming in and hitting in areas that weren’t hit the first time there was no hope for the two groups. We did loose 3 Dragons and at least 10 more Griffins though, but it looked like it was over.

All of a sudden we all heard roaring coming from the Glen and fireballs and explosions were seen everywhere. I couldn’t see what was really going on, as it was happening so deep in the forest; when all of a sudden there was a large explosion and a huge fire then nothing.

No sound and there were no other fires just nothing coming from the Glen. All I saw was just the burning of the trees of the forest around the Glen.

What could have happened I thought? I looked at Raycor and even in the rain I could see his eyes were sparkling like he was crying that’s when I knew the Dragons I had him post to guard the Forest Glen, my home, were all dead.

“OH MY GOD!!” I exclaimed, “How.” We had hit all the Ogres and Dwarfs before any of them had gotten over the river, if any had got past us all on this side the Folk that were in the woods would have gotten any that we might have missed as I knew my father would have had that area guarded like a fortress.

I didn’t like what I was feeling I wanted to get to the Glen to get home and see what was going on I wanted to see my parents and Diel again also my friends too.

I looked at Raycor, “I need to get home now.” I said. My eyes were white with the anger I felt, but I also was worried too as my headband was glowing and hurting worse than it ever did before I could see a slight reflection off of Raycor’s wet scales.

“No Sertial, we cannot we must clean up this mess before us, and then we can leave.” He said.

I new he was right but I didn’t want to stay, I really wanted to get home, Raycor put his mighty claw on my shoulder and said. “Everything will be alright let’s get the valley floor cleaned up of the bodies then we will go see what has happened.”

Why didn’t I believe him, I just knew something was wrong but he was right I just couldn’t leave? Froytel, Loreayl and Justyn had come over to where we were by this time.

We all looked into the valley. All the Griffins and Dragons that were left were on the ground moving all the dead bodies onto some of the fire piles that were burning. I saw a few Centaurs’ in the valley as well and that gave me some hope but I didn’t see any Elvin Folk.

Where were the Elvin’s? I thought.

I know they would have come out of the woods to help if they could. Now I really was worried what had happened to them, where had they all gone?

Soon there were big bonfires all over the place the smell was overwhelming. I saw a couple of Dragons near each of the fires keeping them going as all the other creatures were piling bodies on them; even the bodies of the Dwarfs that were pulled from the rubble below us and put onto the fires. Soon one by one all the Griffins and then the Dragon’s left the valley floor and flew up to the plateau.

The only ones left were the ones tending the fires. I then walked away from the edge with my head down and tears falling from my eyes. I couldn’t watch anymore as I walked away. I didn’t even notice Justyn reach for my hand, he missed.

I just kept on walking I walked right into the forest there on the plateau I went deeper and deeper till I couldn’t see or here anything but the rain and my footsteps. I had found a large palmetto bush so I sat underneath it, it then moved its branches up and the leaves covered my head like a protector from the rain.

I was lost in thought and worry over what we had just gone through and what might have happened back at home and to my family and I had my head resting on my knees. When Froytel came up to me he laid down in front of me he asked. “Are you all right my friend?”

“NO I’M NOT ALL RIGHT!!” I yelled at him my eyes turning white with the anger as I felt them and I started to cry.

“I’m sorry you had to go through all this Sertial I am very proud of you right now though.” He said.

“Proud, Proud? How could you be proud of me?”

“There were 100’s of Ogres and 1000’s of Dwarfs out there, what if we just wiped out their entire races?” I said.

“Well I hope that hasn’t happened to them, I hope some of those groups were able to withstand the Sorcerer’s power” He said.

“God I hope so or else I just destroyed two people.” I cried.

Tears were still falling down my face; I hadn’t seen all the others show up either during my tryst.

Raycor then spoke, “I have fought many a battle over the years. It never gets easy watching people die; it is not something to get use too either. You have to learn from it and try not to make the things of the past happen in the future.”

“Neither my father nor any of the Elvin Folk were responsible for this mess that has accrued here today.” I said.

“I know you are not responsible for this war Sertial, and neither is your family, somewhere out there is an evil Sorcerer that took control over those people and he or she just ruined all their lives.” Froytel said.

“You’re telling me, he or she not only ruined their lives but what of ours as well?” I asked.

“How are we all going to cope after all this?” Justy asked.

“With the help and guidance of friends and family.” Loreayl said, “We will be there for each other we will guide you and help you with your pain, as you need it.”

I hadn’t looked at any of them since they got there my head had been on my arms which was resting on my knees still. When I looked up I saw them all looking at me Froytel was off to my left, Raycor on my right With Justyn and Loreayl in the middle, with Raycor’s large wing stuck out over their heads keeping them out of the rain as much as possible.

I motioned for Justyn to come over to me and he rushed into my arms pushing me up against the palmetto bush and squeezing me tight. We both were crying into each others shoulder, racked with sobs over what we just went through, why did I get him in this mess in the first place? I thought.

He must have heard my thoughts as he sent back, “I wouldn’t have had it any other way; you are my partner, my soul mate, you have helped me so now I help you. Like Loreayl said we’re a team, we now work together on the things that matter to each of us.”

Raycor said, “Justyn is right you both are a team now along with Loreayl you are a force to be reckoned with you have all been put on this earth for a special reason of that I don’t know yet except I do know that you Sertial are to be King of the two worlds; that I am certain.”

“I don’t feel special right now I feel lower than dirt, lower than the bugs that live in the dirt.” I said.

“You have grown up in the last couple of days Sertial and have seen things that no person should see, Justyn you are human born you should not have seen any of which you have witnessed these last few days.” Froytel said. “You have though and of that I am deeply sorry for you both and hopefully in time you will be able to look on this day and know that you have made the bond that you have made between the two of you and see that something good has come out of it.”

“Froytel is right if it weren’t for this stupid war you would have never been on the trail to the Pride Lands where we found Justyn.” Loreayl said. “If that had not happened what would or could have happened to him?”

“You’re right on that point, I have found the Love of My Life.” Looking into Justyn’s eyes as I said this.

Justyn then kissed me so deeply, we still were crying but now the tears were for each other and not just for what we had gone through. When we had both calmed down, which took a long time and kissing each other and holding each other. we put our foreheads together in what I guess was our trademark position.
